Allowing marine ilmenite sand mining in Mannar district may cause environmental destruction, sea erosion, effects on fishing industry, destruction of biodiversity and as a result the life of the people in that area may also be affected. Accordingly, the civic, mass, religious and citizen organizations that recognized the problems organized a protest demonstration and rally in Mannar city center today (26). A large number of people attended the event to inform the people about the future disaster and gain the attention of the authorities to it.
